Recently however the Kwangtung authorities ordered that a seal should be attached by the Chinese Government on the property in question as it belonged in part to Ang Tan, who the Assistant Magistrate of Macau had embezzled money while in an official position at Canton.
The Body were able to prove that they had no connection in this matter with any other person but Fung Wa-chun, who had mortgaged the coal to them and they therefore maintained that it was their property. The Viceroy had no right to sell it.
On receiving this complaint
the Governor communicated with His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton, who informed him in reply that the Viceroy not only refused to remove the attachment on the coal but also demanded that Fung Wa-chun should be sent to Canton for trial. He also received reports on this case from the Consul-General at Canton from which it appears that Fung Wa-chun is a British subject born in Hongkong, where he has resided all his life.
